If I think a book may be worth reading, I typically try to read it before seeing its film adaptation. I ignored this edict with Paul Theroux’s The Mosquito Coast, assuming I’d never get around to it, and I suspect this was a big mistake. What doesn’t work on screen probably does work on the page, and the movie hints at a novel that is deeper and grander.
